The Sound of Music at the Fox Theatre was one of several shows that I have been privileged to see there (Radio City, The Wizard of Oz, Wicked, Phantom, Jersey Boys, Spring Awakening, etc.). Something unique about the play, with appreciation towards the director, was the enchanting simplicity of the set and lighting. It was simple and bare, but in a warm manner. Much like Maria, a nun-in-training with no possessions and excess heart. Also, It made me remember the simplicity of childhood. Given, every director is different. There were definitely a few things that I would have done differently, or that I would have instructed my actors to do. The adults, especially, were lackluster in their complexities and thoughts. It was hard to become engaged in the story. In fact, the emotional build was practically nonexistent- the characters' journeys nebulously defined. If I hadn't seen the movie, the story would hardly have had any emotional effect whatsoever- which is wrong. The play has such powerful emotional pulls- to Austrian patriotism, to love, to music, to standing up when everything above comes crashing down, the social statement of self-centeredness- it was all lost somehow. It was very hard to get emotionally involved in the story. The scenes didn't flow exactly well. On the other hand, I thought the children were quite marvelous, as well as the man who plays the devious and charmingly self-centered talent scout. I appreciated Maria's own rendition of the character, as opposed to an imitation of Julie Andrews, who played the role to perfection. My favorite was the Mother, and all the nun's harmonies because they were so tight and breath-taking. I wanted the characters (such outstanding characters) to be more developed and brought to life. The playwrights had a lot to say with the Sound of Music, and it is the director's job to make sure it all gets said and understood. I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

Sound of Music - bit boring

This musical started 20 minutes late. Went 3 hours long, too borning. Wish it was closer to Chicago, we wanted to experience a show in Chicago and didn't realize how far away it was, cost too much to get there and was not that exciting, I would never recommend this show other than to the elderly or deaf. I didn't like the distraction of the lady on stage signing to part of the audience. I think it's great you offer that, but I wish I would of known prior to buying tickets. I did not enjoy the show and neither did our enitre group and we about fell asleep before it was over. On a graded scale I'd give it a D. Fair.
